To avoid the build-up of germs and other bacteria here are some tips for cleaning your water bottle

  • Rinse your bottle at the end of each day with warm water and a bit of soap. Other cleaning options include vinegar and water or baking soda and water.
  • Use a bottle brush to scrub all the way to the bottom of the bottle for a more thorough cleaning.
  • Scrub the mouth of the bottle and ridges on its lid.
  • Consider a top rack dishwasher cleaning if you have a dishwasher-safe bottle.
  • Let your bottle air dry if possible after cleaning.

Keeping packed lunches cool

  • Use an insulated bag with an icepack from the freezer to pack your child’s lunch in on really hot days, or choose a lunchbox with a built-in freezer block
  • If your school can’t refrigerate lunches, pop a bottle of water in the freezer overnight to act as an ice pack as it thaws.
  • Freeze sandwiches once you’ve made them. Take them out of the freezer in the morning and they’ll defrost ready for lunchtime
  • Freeze yoghurt in a secure container. Again, take it out in the morning and it should stay cool until lunchtime while it defrosts
  • Pack salad ingredients separately rather than within sandwiches – bread goes even soggier in the heat
