Plastic Free School Award

Ysgol Gyfun Aberaeron received The “Plastic Free School Award” on the 15th May which was awarded by Surfers Against Sewage.

Wales’ First Plastic Free School and Platinum Flag Award (first secondary school in Dyfed).

This has made us officially the first school in Wales to achieve this status. Pupils have completed numerous litter picks around the school grounds, met with Ben Lake and Elin Jones where they were able to express their concerns over litter and single use plastics… sharing their ideas on how to combat plastic use within their community, and have implemented a reward system for pupils who bring in their own reusable cups to the school canteen. Additionally, group members have contacted various companies that supply the school, questioning their use of single-use plastic, receiving many positive responses from those already implementing changes as a result of becoming more aware of their effect on the environment.

In terms of future endeavours, the group have planned a “Plastic Free Day” to take place in June. Challenging the school as a whole to significantly reduce their use of single-use plastics.
Finally, many staff members and pupils have made their own pledges to personally reduce their use of specific plastic products which many are already enforcing.

Also, Pupils have proven their green credentials after being awarded a top eco award. We have been awarded the prestigious Platinum Flag Award (first secondary school in Dyfed) after previously gaining three Green Flag Awards thanks to the environment education programme, Eco-Schools. The Eco-Schools programme inspires and empowers pupil to be leaders of change in their community, helping them learn about sustainable living and global citizenship while giving them the information and support they need to make changes that will benefit their school, local environment and wider community such as reducing waste, energy consumption, transport, biodiversity, healthy living and litter issues.
