During the last term, some of Ysgol Gyfun Aberaeron’s Year 12 Seren students took part in the National Seren Award. Students chose a research subject of their choice: Jessica Jones chose the topic International Law; Elin Howells chose Bio-Acoustics and Its Effect on Wildlife; Jake Willis chose History and Social Sciences with the title ‘Who or What Made Christmas?’; Caryl Shepherd chose Mourning and Memorialisation in Victorian and neo-Victorian Society. These sixth form students worked with designated PhD students, taking part in fascinating academic masterclasses on their chosen subject, in order to produce a university style research-based assignment. This was graded and detailed feedback was provided, allowing them to further develop their academic style and intellectual capabilities. As well as demonstrating independent thought, intellectual rigour, and providing first-rate material for students’ Personal Statements, the most successful assignments can sometimes lead to universities revising their offer/entry requirements. What an accolade! Well done to all students.
